Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

I just called emo 3 times the other day, and when I asked why, these were the reasons I got:

1) I was wearing black pants (um... that's soooo uncommon)

2) I have black hair (oh boy, I must dye my hair a different color because leaving it the natural color makes me emo....)

3) I was wearing a band T Shirt (it's beside the point that it was the Beatles)

So now it seems that "emo" is so prevalent that it's now just an insult and not about music anymore. Anyone else feel this way?

*This is in no way an endorsement of bands like MCR*

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

I don't see how wearing tight jeans and having weird hair makes you 'emo'? If thats the case, many hair metal bands would've been called 'emo'.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

I just wish somebody would fling the whole EMO thing over a cliff and be done with.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Yes, it is. Emo was actually a term for earlier punk rock bands like Fugazi. It stood for Emotional Punk Rock, but today it stands for people who have feelings and dress differently. My Chemical Romance isn't emo, neither is Fall Out Boy, or any mainstream artists. They are no mainstream artists that are emo. People should look up the actual term before they call someone out on it. Granted you can label someone "Emo", but using it negatively is just pathetic. Having TV specials warning parents about the "emo trend" is just bizarre. It's music, not a deadly disease.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

what's with emo by the way? those rebel kids who think the society dumped them? holy cow, they have to grow up.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

yes definitely

especially when people refer to someone daydreaming in study hall 'emo'

or saying anything that has to do with, well, anything

the few people that have refered to me as emo, i have no respect for them anymore

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Emo has always been overused. Chances are, if someone doesn't like you or is just kidding around, you'd probably be called emo. The word is getting annoying, although it always has been.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

The word "emo" really has no meaning to it. I've heard music reviewers call FOB, James Blunt, Radiohead (I know), Paramore, MCR, Elliott Smith, and Secondhand Serenade "emo." Obviously, these bands/artists don't all sound the same. So, which ones are "emo?" That word should just be completely discarded from the English language, there's other words out there that do a better job of describing music.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Oh geeze....

I really want to punch the person who dubbed you an emo for wearing a beatles shirt....

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

i dont like it when people disassociate themselves with emo culture when they are so clearly emo (not talking about you)

if mcr isn't emo, no one is

i also wish that they would collectively acknowledge that they are immature and really do not have good taste in music

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Seems to me the word has become more and more an insult to anyone dressing different or wearing their hair with some odd color or style.

For an old duffer like me, these new insults are a pain to keep up with. I think I'll just stick to my old fashioned obscenities and profanities. At least I don't have to explain what an S.O.B. is. . .

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

well half fit the discription. if ur pants were really tight and u have some goofy haircut, then i would call u emo.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

I get called emo sometimes (mostly at like the mall) when I'm wearing;

1. My skinny jeans

2. Fall Out Boy t-shirt (one or the other, usualy the black one)

3. With my best friend who looks emo anyway.

It's ok. I mostly get called a freak 'cause I'm just different! Lol. I know what you mean!

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Did You see what Brian said...

SO DITTO!!!!!!!!

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Definitely overused. It's taken on such negative connotations that simply uttering the word in reference to something or someone nearly amounts to an attack.

Example:

A friend of mine referred to Elliott Smith as "emo" the other day and nearly gave me a hernia.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

It really is thrown around way too much. I don't think people really think it through when they use the term seeing how emo is an abbreviation for emotional. Who doesn't get emotional?

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

What autumn0085 and Brian said is wayyyyy true.

It's just the stereotypical nature of people. Like before, everyone had the most popular girl" and stuff like that for bashing. Now, the people that were bashed are now lashing out again.

Its like a never ending cycle.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Yes I believe so.

I think it stands for 'Engwie Malmsteen Orchestra'. From what I've gathered, Yngwie has Americanized the spelling of his first name, and is now touring with the 'Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra'. He's trying to capitalize on the great opportunities that MTV's confused youth has to offer. I doubt they'll know the difference!

Mattel is working on a battery operated doll in Yngwie's (Engwie's) likeness. It'll be called 'Tickle Me EMO'. When you tickle it, it shreads through the lead solo in Black Star.

Edit - Sarah C - Yeah I know, just one more cookie, and one more glass of milk! I have a problem turning this stupid computer off sometimes! G'night!

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

I wish it and the rest of the genre would be flung into extinction.

LOL @ "I just tell em that I'm Spooky."

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

Nah, that doesn't make you emo.

Emo:

Oh. Mah. Gawd. My life sucks. I cut my wrists. Wanna see? You know, I cry blood. That's how depressed I am. Depressed, depressed, depressed. *Sigh* You know, these bands, they speak to me, cause they're depressed. Like me. I'm so depressed I cut my wrists.

(Ad infinitum)

So you wear black pants. WOAH that's emo. My whole choir's emo.

Black hair makes not an emo. Terribly dyed black hair with sixty thousand highlights you got because you hate your parents is emo.

Band t-shirts are friggin great.

And... the Beatles are emo?

Goo goo ga joob... so deep and dark like my feelings... and yellow submarines, so mysterious and sad...

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

I think labels in general are thrown around a bit too much.. If I get called goth or emo one more time I'm gonna SNAP! So what if I have hot pink converses.. it's called growing up in the 80's, bright colors attract us 80s kids! Sometimes the kids that are friends with my cousin (14 yrs old) ask if I am emo or goth... I just tell them I'm spooky, and leave it at that.

Isn't the term "emo" flung about too easily nowadays?

But sarah, the Beatles ARE emo.....case in point:

"Yes I'm lonely, wanna die.

Yes I'm lonely, wanna die.

If I ain't dead already

Ooh girl you know the reason why..."

So, wearing a Beatles t-shirt definitely makes you emo.

:-)

The poor little kiddies....they really haven't a clue. Since it's becoming such a loose term, maybe the whole emo scene is about to just go away? We can hope.

Edit: I saw the Black Crowes last night. When they came out for an encore, Chris said "As we get further into the future, people tend to forget what real rock n' roll is..." and then something about Prozac making you forget stuff (I couldn't understand the last part, someone was screaming in my ear)...then they played Yer Blues! They gave me goosebumps...it was great. Not as good as John, of course, but still great.

lol, just thought I'd add that little side note.
